HMS Victory

Nelson’s famed warship, wonderfully preserved at Portsmouth Dockyard is a “must” for  visitors to Britain, and of course for Britons too. I am interested in the fact that before Trafalgar she was scheduled for the breaker’s yard, but was reprieved to meet the exigencies of the Napoleonic Wars and expensively refitted before the battle.

The beauty of the workmanship is amazing, in view of the fact that the object of all that labour is destined to be shot to pieces! One can omly imagine from the “broadside” picture the effect of all those guns going off at once.
