A13th. century Norman structure on Belfast Lough, this castle must rate as one of Ireland’s most “business-like” castles, since it remained a fortified site until the 19th. century. It was frequently “in action” – the strangest occasion being in the American War of Independence, when the castle was involved in a raid by an American privateer, John Paul Jones. Extraneous additions have been removed, so the structures seen today are true to the original concept.
