Victorian/Edwardian Belfast
Two more examples of nostalgia for the period of confidence shown in the architecture of the big cities of the Western world before the shock of the 1914-1918 War. Municipal pride is shown in the Water Office, which looks as if it would be equally at home (architecturally) in Florence. The “Assurance” building shows a nostalgic leaning towards the Gothic. Both structures, if my limited knowledge of geology serves me, are of red sandstone -reminiscent of Glasgow. (So much warmer than the granite of Aberdeen and Edinburgh)
