The other day the sun came out, announcing winter’s end(no doubt prematurely). A visit to a neighbouring beach was indicated. The stream coming down from the hills after rain and snow was showing an unusual reddish-brown colour. The beach in one area was more shells than sand. In another splintered driftwood dominated. Some trees, usually of the “imported” variety, were “under bare poles”. Others of the native New Zealand variety had their permanent quota of leaves.
